This workshop proposes an intuitive approach to electromagnetic transduction through exercises that will allow you to listen to what information cassette tapes contain, modify their character and redefine them. Join us for an experimental, socially distanced and objectively magnetic workshop on making unconventional sounds with cassettes. Open to anyone, but especially families with children, no engineering experience or musical ability needed!

We’ll learn how to join tape loops and much more! We’re going to see how magnetic tape really works, how to exploit its peculiarities to make music, and we’re going to discuss the incredible cultural impact of the cassette tape: from the beginning of an era of home recording accessible to everyone to the political revolutions . You will learn a lot: you will produce sounds that have definitely never existed before and you will meet a group of very creative and friendly people.

Get ready to search for sounds, take risks, make mistakes and get dirty. Using extended techniques to manipulate the heads, you can amplify the information on the tapes outside and inside the cassettes and even make collages and build complete pieces by investigating the sounds and modulations that arise from the speed and direction in which the head moves. . The activity proposes an intuitive approach to electromagnetic transduction through exercises that will allow you to listen to what information the cassette tapes contain, modify their character and redefine them.

Sarah Rasines She is an artist and researcher with a preference for hybrid roles at the intersections between programming, self-publishing, teaching, radio, construction with sound, the materialization of more or less independent projects or the creation of networks. In 2018 he created Crystal Mine to promote the exchange of music under the philosophy of #anticopyright. This self-managed label is intended to release music on cassette, reinforcing those fresh and risky projects based on limitless experimentation.
