The errors made in the excavation of the possible remains of D’Artagnan compromise their identification

The lack of care with which it was excavated last March the possible skeleton of D’Artagnan, the famous chief of the musketeers of Louis XIII and Louis XIV of France, in a church in the Dutch city of Maastricht, may compromise the identification of the remains. The problem stems from the way in which Wim Dijkman, former municipal archaeologist, carried out the work without permission from the City Council. He piled the bones touched with his bare hands in plastic containers, making it difficult to obtain a clear result in DNA tests. The police arrested him because he had been left with a humerus and two teeth that he had to return to regain his freedom, and now the investigation continues with difficulty.
