The European Union is not usually on the thank-you list of the winners of an Oscar or other international film awards, but its role in the shadows, with financing that allows independent projects to see the light even if they do not promise to become blockbusters commercial, is no less fundamental. This is what the almost 5,000 actors, directors and other figures of European and international cinema remember in an open letter published within the framework of the Cannes festival, which opens this Tuesday, in which they urge Brussels to guarantee that these projects will continue to have the necessary funds in the next multiannual budget of the EU, currently in the negotiation phase.
