April Fair: Ear to the delivery of Rafael Serna | Culture

The Sevillian Rafael Serna is not an exquisite, but he made the trip aware that this was a toss-up run for his career. Last year he only fought three bullfights, and his time at Las Ventas last Easter Sunday, against Martín Lorca’s bulls, was not accompanied by luck. For this reason, Seville was the ideal place to give everything, for unlimited dedication, waiting for that bull to come out that would allow him to develop his courage, his pride and that fighting spirit that permeates those who lack a little jar of essences.

And Serna complied perfectly with the protocol. He fought as best he could against a complicated first bull, with an ugly style and abrupt behavior; gentle like the entire bullfight, violent, who attacked very unevenly, loaded with difficulties, who threw screws and managed to destabilize him. But he did not give up and received the fifth on his knees in the media with a long exchange that forced him to throw himself to the ground; He was, however, able to draw four clear Veronicas, the only ones that were drawn all afternoon. He toasted the audience, knelt on his knees and thus began the task of muleta a bull of violent breed, with genius, character and mobility, but fast from class.

As it was, Serna only had to play it safe and show that courage is not just assumed or throw in the towel. He decided to settle his shoes, endure the angry attacks of his rude opponent, and let it be what God wants.

What happened then is that all his work turned out to be muddled, as temperamental as it was lacking in depth, but also a waste of disposition, dedication and honor. You can’t ask for more from someone who gives everything honestly. He bent low with bullfighting before charging a rear thrust that was enough to earn him a well-deserved ear for the disposition of a brave bullfighter.

The Fuente Ymbro bullfight, very well presented, broke the illusions of the young shortlist due to its meekness, its violence, its hardness and harshness.

Álvaro Lorenzo found himself with these wickers, who seemed like a resurrected bullfighter (there is nothing like seeing yourself at the bottom of the cliff to react), and he gave a lesson in security and firmness against a rough and very dull first bull. The bullfighter never lost face, who made it clear that he has qualities to continue trying to be someone in bullfighting.

They returned the third of banderillas to the fourth and in its place came a hat from Murteira Grave that seemed to have problems with its eyesight, in addition to being a tame, dull and outcast bull. With such material, Lorenzo could not show a determined effort not to clash.

Molina, from Albacete, who performed at La Maestranza, didn’t look out of place either. Kneeling in the media he received his first and had difficulties, but, at least, his disposition was clear. He drew a pair of tight chicuelinas, and little else. The bull, meek like the others, very hurt in banderillas, let go of his face in his attacks and without any fixity he insisted on tarnishing the good intentions of the bullfighter.

In the fifth of the afternoon he drew a tafalleras that he stitched with a showy revolera and raised the olés from the public, and in his, the sixth, he was only correct and dull. The animal moved in the last third, but without any quality, so that, between screws and his face in the clouds, the good intentions of a bullfighter who will return to his homeland with his head full of questions disappeared.

F. Ymbro/Lorenzo, Serna, Molina
