Things to do in London this bank holiday weekend (May 23-26)

Explore 2,000 years of Indian history

Indian history

British Museum

Charting more than 2,000 years of history, Ancient India is a new exhibition at the British Museum with more than 180 objects on display, including sculptures, paintings, drawings and manuscripts. Colourful, multi-sensory and atmospheric, the show examines India’s multi-faith society, exploring its devotional art from a contemporary and global perspective and studying how now familiar depictions of deities and enlightened teachers came to be. A transportive and mesmeric collection of stories and history. From May 22. britishmuseum.org

Check out Cornelia Parker’s new show, History Painting

Soho’s Frith Street Gallery

History Painting

Frith Street Gallery

Soho’s Frith Street Gallery is presenting an exhibition of new works by Cornelia Parker, who has created a series of paintings inspired by historic newspaper and magazine covers and the colour analysis charts of pioneering American artist Emily Noyes Vanderpoel (1842-1939). The pieces are seemingly abstract oil-on-canvas but represent narratives in headline titles. In turn, they hark back to Vanderpoel: Parker was drawn to her coloured grids, which deconstructed everything from Egyptian sarcophagi to Assyrian tiles, early Greek vases to butterfly wings. Everything was under inspection, their palettes scrutinised. Until July 5. frithstreetgallery.com

Head down to hot new restaurant Hello JoJo

Hello JoJo

Hello JoJo

There was dismay when Forza Win closed its Camberwell restaurant, but a new venture has arrived bringing fresh vibes and fresh flavours. Hello JoJo is the work of local pair Jo Lavender and Rob Newlan. In the morning, a bakery, and for lunch and dinner there are classic London dishes like smoked potato dumplings with spring greens, crab linguine and Tamworth pork chop with garlic sauce. Wines are low intervention and the drinks list is heavy on things like vermouth. hellojojo.co.uk

Take a cinema trip and the new Mission Impossible caper

Tom Cruise poses on top of a biplane at Leicester Square Gardens in London (Ian West/PA)

PA Wire

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Is this Tom Cruise’s last M:I film as the name suggests? Who knows. Probably not. He’s surely got a few more stunts in him. The latest installment of the crash and bang franchise follows our hero Ethan Hunt as he continues to fight against “Gabriel” – the villain – and who is intent on obtaining an AI programme known as “the Entity”, which he would use to do much ill. There’s not much more to it than that. Expect a fast-paced caper with plenty of explosions as the little Hollywood star takes on new drama. The best bit of the new film might be Cruise hanging off a plane wing mid-flight.

Or stay in and catch up with Jeremy Clarkson on his farm

Kale Cooper, Jeremy Clarkson and Lisa Hogan on Clarkson’s Farm 4 (Ellis O’Brien/Prime Video)

Ellis O’Brien/Prime Video

Jeremy Clarkson, Kaleb Cooper, Lisa Hogan and Charlie Ireland are back for a fourth season of Clarkson’s Farm. Fresh challenges await, we’re told, as the team takes on new and ambitious projects. The series also follows Clarkson’s efforts in buying a pub – the Farmer’s Dog, now open and doing a roaring trade – which is no easy task even as a millionaire broadcaster, and there’s a cameo from old Grand Tour pal Richard Hammond. Let’s hope for some tractor racing.

Listen to Ezra Furman’s new album Goodbye Small Head

Ezra Furman

Ezra Furman

Those who don’t immediately recognise the name Ezra Furman might know her songs from the hit Netflix TV show Sex Education, for which she provided the soundtrack for all four seasons. Her latest record, Goodbye Small Head, continues a telling sound; a distinctive, calming voice. Furman said the album covers the topic of weakness, heartbreak, mysticism and societal pitfalls. It is power in vulnerability or, as the US artist put it, “triumphant in its wounded way”. ezrafurman.com

Or sit in the park and read Vanishing Landscapes by Bonnie Lander Johnson

Vanishing Landscapes

Hachette

This is a captivating combination of nature writing and social polemic. It tells the story of the changing countryside through plants – like woad, saffron, reeds – and the people that still live from them. You didn’t think anyone still harvests reeds for thatches, or grows saffron (think Saffron Walden) for baking? Nature writers often treat humankind as the enemy; this book shows that we’re all in this together. hachette.co.uk

Challenge yourself with Unsilenced, Sexual Violence in Conflict at the Imperial War Museum

Imperial War Museum

“Whenever conflict erupts, violence is present,” says Sara Bowcutt from Women for Women International, introducing a new exhibition at the Imperial War Museum that tells the stories of child evacuees, victims of trafficking, and prisoners of war from the First World War to today. Considering contexts in which sexual violence occurs in conflict, this aims to increase public awareness and informing others about a truly horrific issue. Advised for 16 and over. Until November 2, iwm.org.uk

Make plans for the upcoming weekends

James Manning/PA Wire

Kylie’s Tension Tour arrives at the O2 this month and is set to be a stunner. “I can’t wait to share beautiful and wild moments with fans all over the world, celebrating the Tension era and more,” she said. “It’s been an exhilarating ride so far and now, get ready for your close up because I will be calling lights, camera, action … and there will be a whole lot of Padaming!” It’ll be high energy, a lot of fun, and there will probably be her wine in situ too. Her new Côtes des Provence Rosé is coming out on May 28 as Kylie celebrates five years of winemaking. From May 26. theo2.co.uk
