Richard Avedon’s legendary Wild West settles in Madrid

Cold looks, serious, sometimes defiant gestures. There is also tenderness due to the fragility that is transmitted by whoever looks at us. Some seem to have bad tempers, but who knows, how not to have them with lives that are not easy at all. The photographer Richard Avedon (New York, 1923-San Antonio, 2004) was established, he had shown the glamor of fashion and the cream of American society when he received a commission to photograph people from the Far West of his country. The visual story he composed, his artistic vision, through harsh images, on a white background and natural light, made up the famous book In the American West (1985). Four decades later, the Mapfre Foundation, in Madrid, presents “110 reference copies, on which Avedon based his photobook and for the first exhibition, in which the photos were shown in large sizes,” the curator of the exhibition, Clément Chéroux, explains to this newspaper.
