The question in the title, of course, is rhetorical. Who is going to choose the bullfighters in Las Ventas? The company, naturally. It would be better if the businessmen told what criteria they take into account when advertising a bullfighter. With today’s poster they have made a mistake, without a doubt.
The three bullfighters this afternoon, in view of what was seen in the ring, lack the minimum conditions to do the parade in this plaza. All three were far below the well-presented, brave and noble Portuguese iron bull of Couto de Fornilhos. Four of the bulls fought, the first three and the sixth, were applauded in the drag; All of them, to a greater or lesser degree, complied with the rods, and those who received the public’s approval offered a game on the crutch with sufficient quality for their wrestlers to triumph.
But it wasn’t like that. What’s more, two of them, Cristian González and Juan Alberto Torrijos, each took a turn around the ring on their own, and without anyone having asked them; The first, furthermore, after the death of the fifth bull, came out to greet the third to the silent surprise of the respectable one.
It’s not serious. Someone must tell these bullfighters that there are written and unwritten rules that must be respected; Everything else is unacceptable ridicule that must be avoided, especially in a position in the Sales category.
None of the three demonstrated technical ability with either the cape or the crutch; lacking enthusiasm and without any will to fight. The three capped in any way, with the exception, perhaps, of some graceful verónicas from Torrijos to the third and a removal by caleserinas from Arruza to that same steer. That’s where the cape bullfighting ended.
Intemperate, superficial and without a hint of command Arruza in which he opened the way, with insubstantial fiddling, and the obvious impression of an urgent desire to get his opponent off his back as soon as possible; and bored with the standing fourth.
González abused very short runs, always taking off and letting the crutch get caught frequently. He didn’t get to say anything either to the more than drinkable second bull or to the most boring fifth; but none of this stopped him from turning around the ring and going out to greet the third party.
Torrijos showed a happy disposition at the start of the third, but soon his lack of control and rest became more noticeable, which prevented him from taking advantage of the animal’s good conditions. He gave him, however, a good thrust, which was the best part of his performance. And very deficient, without palliatives, before the sixth. Despite the shouting of a group of supporters, the muleta blows came without depth and detached, which ended up blurring an afternoon that, with all certainty, the three will not forget.
And the question returns: what criteria are used to announce the bullfighters? Today, a gross mistake by the company.
Couto de Fornilhos / Arruza, González, Torrijos
Steers of Couto de Fornilhos, well presented, competent in the field – the first one did a good fight on horseback -, noble and well-dressed. The first three and the sixth were applauded in the drag.
Mario Arruza: -notice- almost entirely lying (silence); prick and counter thrust (silence).
Cristian González: perpendicular and crossed lunge -warning- (return to the ring on your own); low lunge (he comes out to say hello without anyone asking him).
Juan Alberto Torrijos: lunge (turning around on your own); prick and thrust somewhat fallen (silence).
Las Ventas bullring. May 3. Third and last celebration of the Community Fair. A quarter of entry (5,623 spectators, according to the company).
