Great masters for uncertain times: the art market starts up again, but with the brakes on

The art market is recovering, although with the greatest of caution. The Art Basel fair opened its doors this Thursday in the Swiss city of Basel with the feeling that the sector is beginning to move, although far from the exuberance of the years of economic euphoria, back in pre-pandemic times. The context does not invite great celebrations either: trade tensions, rising inflation and geopolitical uncertainty that weighs on any purchase decision. In the two previous days reserved for professionals and VIP collectors, the largest art fair in the world recorded million-dollar sales, but also an undeniable inclination towards lower risk, with less speculation and more works signed by great masters. Buyers have returned to the fair, with 290 galleries present, but without reckless bets.
