Three established bullfighters, at the gates of the alternative, three well-founded hopes for the immediate future of bullfighting, three bullfighters with proven quality must come to the Seville Fair with a real bullfight, well presented, and with the seal of bravery and caste.
But not. Their representatives, Curro Vázquez, Cristina Sánchez and Domingo López Chaves, with the complicity of the company and the authority, choose six bullocks made of an iron famous for its nobility and lack of race, such as that of Talavante, very unequally presented, tame with solemnity in the horses – which has not mattered to anyone for a long time – but sweet as the syrup in the muleta, which is what is valued today. The famous rancher Fernando Cuadri already said it: “A bull that is simply noble is simply stupid.”
Six little sardines for the bullfighters to enjoy and the fans to get bored. That seems to be the fundamental objective of the walking bullfighting: for the fans, who are becoming fewer and fewer, to leave and the spectators to have fun.
Luckily, the three bullfighters, the Mexican Emiliano Osornio, the Portuguese Tomás Bastos and the Spanish Julio Norte have proven quality, showed a commendable decision and somehow covered up the syrupy sweetness of their opponents.
The three bullfighters participated in quites and left the capotero flag very high: the Mexican highlighted the veronica and the tafalleras; for the latter and chicuelinas the Portuguese, like Julio Norte. The three of them handle the crutch with ease and depth, and they starred in vibrant moments, some more intertwined than others.
Osornio, for example, could not say anything about the sheepish soul of his dull and noble first, and at the end of the muleteo in the fourth he confirmed that he has plant and very good condition in a couple of batches of excellent naturals. He has not yet passed the subject of supreme luck and must continue to insist on it.
Bastos has an elegant demeanor, exudes skill and handles the crutch with ease and naturalness. Music sounded from the two steers in his lot, but he did not finish drawing the dreamed task; In the first, who was an obedient little dog, the emotion of the breed was lacking, and in the fifth he spent too much time doing an excessively long task, inappropriate for someone with a head.
And the winner was Julio Norte, with the best batch, yes, and below his two opponents. He is a brave, technical, honorable bullfighter with an excessive desire to win. Well against his first, tireless repeater, with which he excelled on both hands, but without the finish that the bull deserved; That is to say, it had two ears and only one walked.
And before the sixth, a tame man, who fled in terror from the horse, and showed genius and caste in the last third, he was seen dazed, knowing that he could open the Prince’s Gate, but he closed it due to his accelerated desire for triumph. Much disposition and little command; overwhelming and little temper in his hands. He punctured before charging a back thrust, which cooled the spirits and the request for an ear was a minority, which did not prevent the president, Gabriel Fernández, from taking out the handkerchief again and influencing, one more afternoon, the discredit of this square.
Talavante/Osornio, Bastos, North
Talavante steers, very fair in appearance, except for the fourth; very gentle horses, soft, very noble and of enormous class and absence of breed in the final third. Third and fifth stood out.
Emiliano Osornio: two jabs and thrust through (silence); puncture and the bull lies down (palmas).
Tomás Bastos: perpendicular lunge -warning- and a mad dash (return to the ring); rear lunge -warning- (ear).
July North: low lunge (ear); jab and rear thrust (ear after minority request).
