Drapers Arms boss: The rates system is a chaotic mess

Where else? Another of my absolute favourite restaurants, Mountain, which is right in the centre of town, in Soho. Currently, the VOA says its rateable value is £210,000, and that the new figure will be £232,500, an 11 per cent increase. Apart from being a huge fan of Mountain, I picked this large, central restaurant because it demonstrates that location affects rates. But I also wanted to compare it to the Devonshire, which is just around the corner. I anticipated that I would find the Devonshire to be facing a massive hike in rates, being a pub. The Devonshire just won first place in the top 50 Gastropubs (congratulations!!) and its incredible success story over the last two years means it has fans everywhere. It has been called the most famous pub in the world.
