Dealing first with lifeboat rescue, on the bicentenary of the RNLI, David noted that Cardigan Bay’s earliest station was at Barmouth (1828) with Aberdyf also very early (1837). A third at Aberystwyth (1861), making three in close proximity, was needed due to the volume of cargo and fishing traffic at these ports. The sailing ships shyed away at lunch and the lifeboatmen had to row them.
