The right-handed Curro Romero will undergo surgery this coming Wednesday at the Virgen Macarena hospital in Seville after suffering a fracture of the head of the right femur as a result of a domestic accident that occurred last Friday at his own home. At first it was not given any importance, but the persistence of the pain, according to sources close to the family, forced him to be admitted.
He was scheduled to undergo surgery yesterday, Sunday, but different clinical circumstances have made it advisable to delay the operation.
The so-called ‘Pharaoh of Camas’, 90 years old, has other ailments and overcame laryngeal cancer in 2020 that marked a turning point in his health.
Curro Romero is a myth in Seville bullfighting and accumulates numerous awards, recognitions and the respect of the fans and the entire society. He made his public debut on July 25, 1954 in the disappeared Plaza de la Pañoleta, at the late age of 21. His presentation in the Plaza de la Maestranza took place in 1957, replacing the announced Juan García ‘Mondeño’. Romero took the alternative in Valencia on March 18, 1959 from Gregorio Sánchez and that same year he debuted as a bullfighter at the April Fair in Seville, which he did not miss until the same year of his retirement, in the season of 2000.
His irregular career is dotted with failures and resounding successes. The years of his greatest professional fulfillment coincide with the 60s of the last 20th century. In the 90s he starred in his last professional resurrection and became one of the most unmistakable characters on the Sevillian social scene, especially following his marriage to Carmen Tello.
On Corpus Christi Day in 1960 he opened the Prince’s Gate for the first time after cutting off two ears from a Tassara hat. He would do it again five times throughout his career, in which seven large doors were also scored in Plaza de Las Ventas in Madrid. Afterwards, 42 seasons would come in which the peaks and the abysses alternate. His last great success came in 1999, when he cut off two ears for the last time in the Plaza de la Maestranza in Seville.
The following year, on October 22, he announced his surprise retirement after performing at a festival that had been organized to benefit Andex in La Algaba, hand in hand with Morante de la Puebla. Her last performance dressed in lights had been on September 10, 2000 in Murcia. Since then he has become a shining figure on the bullfighting, cultural and social scene of the city of Seville. He is the Favorite Son of Andalusia and, among other awards, last February he premiered the newly created Andalusia Bullfighting Awards.
