Robin Williams was one of the greatest comedic actors of his time and was best known for his brilliant performances in films such as Aladdin, Mrs. Doubtfire in Jumanji. He has also had dramatic roles in projects such as Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting, where he was a warm, friendly mentor.

In contrast, his performance in 2002’s One Hour Photo is absolutely chilling, fully embodying the role of Stalker in a way that deserves far more praise. It’s a forgotten masterpiece in which Williams played one of his best roles.

Shaking
One hour photo is a psychological thriller written and directed by Mark Romanek. In addition to Williams, the film also stars Connie Nielsen, Michael Vartan, Gary Cole and Eriq La Salle.

In One hour photo follows Sy Parrish (Williams), a technician who works at a photo development center. A lonely man with no friends, he becomes obsessed with the Yorkin family, especially Nina Yorkin and her young son Jake, whose photographs are regularly developed.

Jack Nicholson
In an interview, director Romanek said that he was inspired to make the film by 1970s films about lonely men, the most notable of which was Taxi Driver (1976). He also said that Jack Nicholson was the first to be asked to play the lead role. Nicholson turned down the role because he thought the character was too similar to the role he played in The Shining.

Eventually, Williams got the part. He prepared for the role by training for two and a half days at a photo development lab in Southern California. One hour photo premiered at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival and received positive reviews from film critics, praise for Williams’ unusual role, for which he won the Saturn Award for Best Actor.
