The next meeting on 23rd January will feature Guest Speaker John Richard Hodges who will give a talk entitled ‘Chateau Impney, Droitwich – Victorian Country House’. Impney Hall was renamed Chateau Impney in 1949.
It was built between 1869 and 1875 for John Corbett, the ‘Worcestershire Salt King’ and his wife Anna.
Corbett was the son of a boat operator on the Delph Canal and became one of the most successful entrepreneurs of his time.
The speech tells the story of this extremely wealthy industrialist and philanthropist, his magnificent Victorian country house and the incredible periods of English history that its life has spanned.
John lives in Worcester and works as a part-time teacher and part-time writer. He has published 20 books so far, many of which tell the stories of notable country houses.
Society meetings start at 2.30pm and are held at The Museum of Carpet, Stour Vale Factory, Green Street, Kidderminster. A small fee is charged for very welcome visitors.
