The singer Rosalia has rejected on Wednesday the accusations of “complicit silence” towards the situation in Gaza, where 60,000 people have already died under the famine and the attacks of the Israeli army. Accusations published on social networks by the Spanish fashion designer Miguel Adrover, which is why the Catalan artist has asked that “those who decide and have a power of action are indicated.” The music sector has been especially sensitive to tragedy, with complaints by different artists and calls to the boycott of festivals participated by investment funds linked to Israel.
“I do not see how to embarrass each other the best way to move forward in the fight for the freedom of Palestine,” said the singer in a statement through her Instagram account, which follow 26.8 million people. “It is terrible to see day after day how innocent people are killed and that those who should stop this do not,” added the Catalan.
This Tuesday Adrover, who has traditionally shunned fame and the media, and that has even refused to work with figures of Kanye West, had leaked an email on his Instagram account that had sent him to the artist’s stylist. In it he refused to make a ‘custom look’ (a custom model) to Rosalia for his silence on Gaza. The designer believes that the artist has not “publicly” supported Palestine and, although he recognizes his admiration, remarked that silence “is complicity.”
“Silence is complicity, and more when you have a great speaker where millions of people listen to you when you sing. That’s why you have the responsibility of using this power to denounce this genocide,” Adroover wrote. “Rosalia, this is nothing personal. I admire you for all your talent and for everything you have achieved,” said Adrover, whose documentary The Designer is Dead It premieres at Atlàntida Mallorca Film on August 1. A film that reconstructs its history, from its rise in the New York scene to its gradual disappearance of the media scene. The Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum in New York has various designer garments and received the National Fashion Design Award in 2018.
The singer has not hidden her “great sadness” for the controversy generated in networks and has justified stating that the fact of not having used her platform “aligned with the style or expectations of others” does not mean “at all” that she “does not condemn what is happening in Palestine.”
“Unfortunately, this text is not even enough in a context of extreme violence such as the one that is happening, so I would like to end with deep respect and thanks to the people who really act as NGOs, activists, volunteers, sanitary, workers, cooperatives, associations and journalists dedicating their lives to helping in this cause and many others,” concludes the Catalan singer.
