Rosalía launches ‘Berghain’: violins, sex, fairy tales and Björk in a Berlin club | Culture

At 5:00 p.m. in mainland Spain, noon in New York, nine in the morning in Los Angeles, 10 a.m. in Mexico and 12 p.m. in Buenos Aires, Rosalía has reappeared. This time with the launch of Berghainthe first song and video of Luxtheir new album that is released on November 7.

In Berghain collaborates with the Icelandic singer Björk (they already sang together Oral in 2023) and Yves Tumor, stage name of Sean Bowie, an American producer of experimental electronic music; and its three languages ​​are used: Spanish, English and German. The video is signed by Nicolás Méndez, from the audiovisual production company Canada, who has already signed Badlyone of the songs on the album The evil will by Rosalía. The title of the first song of Lux refers to the legendary techno nightclub in Berlin. Considered a temple of electronic music and which invites you to think if this is the style of the next album. In fact, the score is written on pages from the German publishing house G. Henle Verlag. However, at least this initial song does not have as many traces of techno as one might expect.

In the video, whose aesthetic is at times reminiscent of Yorgos Lanthimos’ films, and which was finally published a couple of minutes after 5 p.m., you can see the Catalan artist arrive home and get comfortable. But when you open the curtains and let the light in, it turns out that the apartment is filled with what looks like a symphony orchestra, with a choir, playing passionately.

Rosalía then starts ironing while singing in the middle of the maelstrom. Then she makes the bed, surrounded by oboes and clarinets whose presence she seems to sense but not perceive directly. Already on the street, with large sunglasses and a gray outfit, she walks followed by the musicians to the cardiologist’s office, who performs an electrocardiogram. “I’m just a sugar cube,” he sings. The orchestra is present in the jewelry store and on the bus, and there are references to the Sacred Heart, while the part of Björk’s unmistakable voice is introduced. When Rosalía returns home, she seems to find herself in a fairy tale, transformed into Snow White, the apartment full of forest animals: the fawn, the raccoon, the owl that appears in the darkness. A little bird sits on the finger and sings (in the voice of the Icelandic artist). The fawn bleeds black blood from its eyes.

The video ends in a nightmarish section, of turns in the bed and monstrous images of deformed animals and drums, a heart, a sugar cube, a dove and the disturbing voice of Yves Tumor obsessively saying: “I’ll fuck you until you love me.” I will fuck you until you love me.

Rosalía announced the release of the song on Sunday on her social media accounts with a few seconds of the video. The artist appears walking, serious, wearing sunglasses and holding onto her bag. The singer is followed by a group of musicians with instruments in hand. And at one point, the gray top she is wearing is changed for a t-shirt that reads: My instrusive thoughts sound like this (My intrusive thoughts sound like this.) This phrase is followed by more musical notes.

This song became known on October 15 when the artist shared the score on her Instagram account. At the same time, he sent those same notes to his followers on Substack. Then the posters with the chords and their image appeared on several screens in Madrid’s Callao Square. By then, Rosalía’s fans around the world were promoting her for free with their performances through their accounts on different social networks.

On Monday, October 20, at night, Rosalía revealed the name of her new album in a Marian apparition in the Plaza de Callao. The artist had announced that something would happen on TikTok at 8:45 p.m. She appeared in an open-plan apartment, surrounded by people filming her and putting makeup on her, combing her hair with an angelic halo, dressing her in white, wearing red ballet flats. Then she got into a car that she drove herself until at a point on Gran Vía she could not continue. He got off, started running along Gran Vía and had to take shelter in a hotel in the city center.
