Clad in dowdy brown school uniforms, each of them is introduced by their star sign, favourite fairground ride, catchphrase (“democracy rocks!” is the first) and an unflattering childhood photo. Each delivers one or more showtune with ironic pizzaz. Baylie Carson’s Ocean, a child of hippie Catholic-Jewish parents who has become an overbearing right-wing brat, kicks things off, dissing her classmates in a bouncy high school musical number. “Never learnt to read; never gonna breed; straight to jail, guaranteed,” she brightly ticks them off, one by one.
