During the inauguration of its master class at the Taormina Film Festival (Italy), Michael Douglas said Tuesday that he “ashamed” in the United States and apologized for the “world chaos” generated under the presidency of Donald Trump. “I understand that much of the responsibility of world chaos comes from my country. I am ashamed of my country and I apologize. I apologize to my neighbors in Canada and Mexico, and also with the countries of the European Union and NATO,” said the 80 -year -old actor against students and film professionals.

Douglas, awarded two Oscar awards and four Golden Globes, received the trajectory award at the old Roman theater in the city. Throughout his career, he has combined his artistic facet with a public commitment: since 1998 he acts as the Messenger of the United Nations Peace and collaborates with the nuclear Threat Initiative, promoting international campaigns for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

In his master class, the actor criticized the constant increase in military budgets, especially in the United States, and expressed his astonishment at the persistence of armed conflicts in the middle of artificial intelligence: “It is ridiculous that, with all the technology we have, let’s continue to witness so many wars.”

With 80 years – he was born at the end of World War II – Douglas said he had never witnessed a period as convulsive as the current one. He urged to replace military investments on initiatives for dialogue and international cooperation, and appealed to diplomacy as the only way to prevent the mistakes of the past.
