On Tiele Day, Friday, April 19, Larissa van Vianen won the 2023 Tiele Work Prize for her master’s thesis Pierre Lyonet (1706-1789). Publishing natural history in the 18th century. The Tiele Foundation awards the prize to stimulate reflection on the book in all its manifestations, present, past and future.

Van Vianen wrote his dissertation at the end of his master’s degree in literature at the University of Amsterdam. During his internship in the research project “Visualizing the Unknown: Scientific Observation, Representation and Communication in 17th century Science and Society”, he first came into contact with the works of the naturalist Pierre Lyonet (1706-1789). In his thesis, he follows his research on the anatomy of willow caterpillars, from observation to presentation and finally publication.
