The disappointment of the Irish Cancer Society is disappointing to humans who may use life -saving bowel screening through the national program.

The purpose of the intestinal display is to detect signs of intestinal cancer at an early stage when there are no symptoms and is available for 59-69 year olds.

Last Friday, HSE announced that the system was expanded today to people aged 70, which means the beginning of the month of consciousness of bowel cancer.

About 2,500 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer in the state each year and is the second most common cause of cancer -related deaths.

Society said it was concerned that Ireland’s low 45 % target in gut cancer screening was last year, and only 41 % of participating participants.

Irish’s target of 45 % of eligible people is significantly lower than that of the European Union 65 %, it said.

The intestinal display provides a free home test for eligible people by mail. Participants use the packaging of the sample for the stool they send back to the service in the Frerepost envelope. The results of their sample will be sent within four weeks.

Steve Dempsey, a lawyer and communications leader with society, said that it was “deeply worried” at the speed of the people who participated in the program.

Society emphasized the case of Tom Mchugh (64) in Dublin, which was diagnosed with bowel cancer in July 2023.

Mr. Mchugh realized that he had not received a home test package when his wife, who is younger, got him. He contacted the intestinal sample and received a pack through which his diagnosis of bowel cancer was observed.

“I am proof that screening works and for everyone hesitant I strongly encourage you to participate,” he said.

“I was okay and healthy. I had no symptoms and yet the bowel cancer was there, and it would have been much worse if it was not caught early through the screening program.”
