Maartje Schermer will take over the new chair from 15 October 2024. At Erasmus MC, he studies ethical and philosophical issues of medical research, practice and policy. He is interested in the changing views of health and disease with new medical technologies, the desirability of early detection of diseases without available treatment, the use of digital technologies in health care to preserve personal attention, and the equitable distribution of treatments.

New skills and insights

“Social development and technological development require new skills and insights,” says KNMG chairman René Héman in a press release. “To be well prepared for this, a scientific study of the effects of these changes is needed. This new KNMG chair helps us with that.

The chair will be established at Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM) in close cooperation with Erasmus MC and Erasmus School of Philosophy (ESPhil). The intention is to work closely with the recently established KNMG School of Law, Healthcare Technology and Medicine at Amsterdam UMC.

Prepare doctors optimally

Héman: “Establishing this new chair is an important step forward in researching and solving the ethical problems raised by healthcare technology. With this chair, we confirm our commitment to optimally prepare doctors for the medical-ethical challenges caused by technology-driven healthcare.”
