Dear England at the National Theatre review: Gareth Southgate’s kind revolution

The rewrite has pushed it into extra time, but Rupert Goold’s production is still a magnificent piece of theatrical craft that fuses sport and art. It will speak even to the most dedicated footie refusenik. I know, because I was one until Southgate and his young squad made me feel what my wife and all my friends had been banging on about for years. In the theatre, I felt a prickling in my eyes at the role call of names – Kane, Rashford, Stirling, Maguire – who briefly made everything seem possible.
