Renewable energy initiatives
An important step in the Maastricht sustainable development strategy is the transition to renewable energy. The city has already installed more than 4,050 solar panels on municipal buildings, including prominent locations such as the Mosae Forum and the Lumière Cinema.
These facilities are expected to save approximately 468,000 kg of carbon dioxide per year. In addition, there are large solar parks in Belvédère and Lanakerveld, supplying energy to 3,800 and 10,550 households, respectively.
Mobility and transport
Maastricht is working on the introduction of a zero-emission zone (ZES) for city logistics, which will come into effect on January 1, 2025. The purpose of the measure is to significantly reduce emissions from urban logistics.
The city is also expanding the number of electric vehicle charging points and encouraging the use of electric cars at electric car sharing and charging stations. All city buses already run on electricity and the municipality’s fleet is becoming more sustainable.

New hydroelectric plants are being built in Borgharen and Zuid-Willemsvaart near Bosscherveld, providing 4,700 and 1,275 households with sustainable energy. Maastricht is working with 16 industrial companies, Maastricht University and other institutions to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 49% by 2030 in line with national targets. The municipality regularly organizes workshops and information sessions on sustainable practices, such as home energy efficiency or renting a container in Maastricht for renovations. In cooperation with housing associations, heating companies and grid operators, the municipality supports the transition of residents to natural gas-free homes. This not only reduces the city’s ecological footprint, but also ensures that sustainable development is possible and affordable for everyone.
