One more year, and it’s been 98, Hollywood is decked out for the Oscars. The most powerful cinematographic event on the planet takes over the city of Los Angeles not only on the Sunday (early morning of March 14 to 15 in Spain) on which it is celebrated, but for days and even weeks before, with parallel activities, traffic cuts and the inevitable metropolitan chaos. And this Wednesday it kicks off, with one of the most symbolic moments: the rollout of the red carpet by the gala’s presenter, the actor and comedian Conan O’Brien.

In a somewhat darker tone than in past years, almost brownish, the host of the gala has rolled out two rolls of the red carpet that will cover the entrance to the Dolby Theater. The carpet, which the more than 2,000 guests at Sunday’s gala will walk on, extends almost 250 meters along Hollywood Boulevard, in the heart of the Walk of Fame, cut for the occasion throughout the week.

O’Brien has been accompanied by three workers, Ignacio, Anthony and Eddie – several hundred people work on the assembly, but specifically on laying the carpet around a dozen – who have helped him unload the heavy roll. Then he repeated the move, because the entrance to the event is so wide (it occupies an entire street) that the carpet is actually divided into two pieces that are then joined together almost invisibly. At the end, as he did last year, when it premiered at the awards, he lay down on the remaining piece of film to pose for the photographers.

Plus, O’Brien has been particularly chatty and funny. He has joked that he was calm, “perhaps too calm,” because he was “taking the same tranquilizers they give to horses.” He has also assured that it will be “more ambitious than last year” and that he has several surprises prepared. He did not want to reveal many details of the gala, but he was asked if he would talk about the war between the United States and Iran. His response has been to invite viewers to see it. “Let them connect and watch it. I’m using what people see in the news to keep them following the Oscars. And that’s an even lower point,” he laughed, making it clear that the viewer will connect with the gala to find out if there is criticism of the political situation.

Dressed in a denim overall, as an operator or technician, he said that he loved the garment, that it was “very comfortable and useful”, and that he was thinking of wearing it on Sunday. The 62-year-old from Massachusetts did not want to give his favorites for the night in which the best films of the season are celebrated; He has stated that it would not be correct on his part. But he couldn’t help but point his finger at someone in particular: actress Rose Byrne, candidate for the independent film If I could, I would kick youin which she steps into the shoes of a long-suffering mother overcome by exhaustion… and in which O’Brien plays, precisely, her therapist. Byrne won the Golden Globe for this award, and is second in the Oscar nominations for best actress, in a category headed by the Irishwoman Jessie Buckley, for Hamnetbut her partner didn’t want to stop praising her.

“It’s a great year for movies, for cinema, and I’m really happy to be here,” said O’Brien, surrounded by journalists from all the countries in the world who asked him for greetings for their regions, from Korea to Mexico. “Oh, Mexico. I recorded a soap opera there, I had a mustache,” he commented with amusement. And do you speak Spanish? “Yes, a little bit. I studied Spanish in high school.” to 10 minutes and when I can I speak Spanish,” he commented, precisely, in Spanish.

O’Brien has spent just 15 minutes on the mat. But while, and afterwards, the workers continued working, placing the more than 275 meters long carpet, almost 20 meters wide that will spread throughout the awards entrance and throughout the street, in the center of the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame, this week more Hollywood and with more stars than ever.
