The classic jokes about Basques—they are born where they want, they go to setas and not rolex and they eat as if cholesterol did not exist—have a long tradition. That the Basques commit the transgression of mocking their founding myths, not so much. Maybe we have to delve into the catacombs of the underground of the 80s to search for its origins: for example, in the joke of the atheist processions that ran through the streets of Vitoria, in some strips of the magazine TMEO or in that Hertzainak song that ironicized the need to take drugs to cope with what being an ideal “basko” entailed.
