On September 27, 1995 it premiered at the Rialto theater in Valencia. Three outsiders from Madrid, by Eduard Escalante, a 19th century author of farces. The first performance was even recorded and broadcast on the regional channel Channel 9. Why so much interest? Because that was Luis García Berlanga’s only foray as a theater director. And he launched into it because Escalante enjoyed great popularity during the filmmaker’s youth, because the work was partly in Valencian and because it talked about social papanatism, one of its great themes.
