How chess nights in London found their cool again

Last month the club also drew a slew of well-known faces including Daisy Lowe, Indira Varma and Charlie Mackesy, who came for the launch of artist Martha Freud’s new Playing Games collection, which features a selection of limited-edition, exquisitely designed chess sets (Martha and Jonah are chess-loving cousins). “All of my family play chess, so the ideas for these boards have been living in my head for a long time,” says Martha. “It’s been a hard year for a lot of people, so it felt like it was time to launch something fun.”
