Actress Scarlett Johansson will star in the new film The Exorcista film that Mike Flanagan, known for his horror films, will direct, produce and write, according to Variety.
The project is a “radical approach” to the legendary horror film and will not be a sequel to The exorcist Believera sequel that was released a few years ago. The original film, which dates back to 1973, was a commercial success with $441 million raised worldwide and ten Oscar nominations.
“Scarlett is a brilliant actress. Her performances always feel realistic, from genre films to summer blockbusters, and I couldn’t be happier to have her in this film, said Flanagan, known for films such as Chuck’s life o The Haunting of Hill House.
Universal bought the rights to the original film for $400 million in 2021 but its first attempt to relaunch a saga in 2023 with The Exorcist: Believer It wasn’t too successful. At the moment, other details about the filming are unknown, except that it will take place in New York City.
Johansson recently helped revive another major Universal franchise with Jurassic World Rebirthreleased this summer, which grossed $868 million worldwide.
