A home care service in Burnham-On-Sea has been given three warnings and rated as ‘requires improvement’ following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Park View, a residential service run by the National Autistic Society in Westfield Road, Burnham, received the notices following an assessment in late September.

The CQC measures five categories which determine how safe, efficient, caring, responsible and well-run care homes are. Park View was rated “Inadequate” in the “Safe” category and “Requires improvement” in the “Efficient”, “Responsible” and “Well managed” categories. It also received a positive result in the “Caring” category, where the service was rated “Good”.

The report added that while the environment was generally safe and clean and people felt safe, there were shortcomings in medication management, staff training and risk management.

Candice York, Chief Executive of Adult Services at the National Autistic Society, said: “The quality of care we provide and the safety of the people who provide it are paramount to us. We take the warnings and findings of the Care Quality Commission report very seriously.

“We have a robust action plan to correct the findings and ensure that the quality of care at Park View returns to the high level that the people we support deserve. While the report highlights areas for improvement, it also highlights the positive aspects of the service we provide, including a Good for Care rating.”

He adds: “We are now focused on continuing to address the areas for improvement identified in the report to ensure we provide people with autism with the standards of care and support we expect and demand.”
