Rhinelander, Wis. (Whtfw) – Pride and applause filled the Rhinelander High School auditorium when 43 students were invited to the National Honor Association, which still meant the largest class of the school.
Faculty advisor Megan Cihla says that NHS is one of the most selective tributes that Rhinelander students are available not only to academic excellence, but also leadership, service and character.
“National Honor Society is an organization that requires students to apply for students through Rhinelander High School,” Cihla explained. “They maintain 3.75 GPA or higher, and we also look at leadership, community service and character.”
Cihla, who led the five -year program, says that the number of new inductions this year has doubled compared to previous ceremonies.
“We actually had 43 people invited this year – by far to double the rest of the year – and they all showed extraordinary strength in our pillars,” he said.
He appreciates both students and their families for building an achievement and service culture.
“The first couple of years we called maybe five or ten,” Cihla said. “But now students start early, give back and look for ways to serve without being told. It really shows how strong this generation is coming.”
NHS members Rhinelander High meet twice a month to coordinate the community service. Students are volunteers in Crescent Elementary’s book Nook, Harvest Hoedown, in a friendly village and maintain an adopted motorway near the ice arena.
“We usually have four or five volunteering opportunities every month,” Cihla said. “They help with community events, read 4K students, and make sure we give back where we can.”
In addition to the immediate service, Cihla says that experience develops leadership and trust – features he hopes that students will carry after a long graduation.
“It helps them become leaders and strong members of the community,” he said. “It adds confidence and flexibility and hopefully gives them the feeling that they want to come back and invest in this community.”
The National Honor Association recognizes students who describe four pillars – scholarships, leadership, service and character – and are one of the highest academic honors in Rhinelander High School.
