At the first meeting of the Northern Lonndale Society, there was an illustrated discussion that is titled “Yellow Earl” from Dr. Rob David.

He revealed a connection between the Cumbia aristocrat and the familiar yellow vans of the car association.

Dr. David spoke of Hugh Lowher, the Lonsdale’s fifth Earl, the founder of AA and the first president.

Due to Earl’s yellow willingness, the newly established car association approved this color for its AA boxes and vans, which are still in use.

Dr. David dedicated to his speech in 1888 when Earl left for a 15 -month expedition at Lowther Castle in his home in Canada and Alaska, where he traveled a sleigh, a dog team and a boat to the Arctic circle.

During his trips, Earl collected inuit objects, many of which are now located in the London British Museum.

North Lonsdale Society members were given details of the speakers’ program throughout the year.

This includes local historian Robert Wheatley, who speaks of James Ramsden, one of the founders of Barrow at the October meeting.

In November, the speaker is Mark Hatton, who presents Keswick from Bromley, which is considered the finest stone disorder in the country.

Andy Lowe will discuss in December at the roadside legacy, followed by Daniel Ellsworth in January talking about Millom, while in February Colin Pickthall will give a presentation on the quarrying of iron.

Furness Barrow railways are the subject of a March meeting by Geoff Holmen, followed by Neil Honeyman spoke of Greek and Roman coins.

For the northern Lonndale Society season, Ian McNichol speaks of a presentation from the village of Urswick at a May meeting.

The Northern Lonsdale Association will meet on the second Tuesday evening of the month in the Ulverston Methodist Church Hall.
