Brian May has resigned as vice-chairman of the British animal protection organization RSPCA. The Queen guitarist announced it on Instagram. He disagrees with the way the organization handles complaints of wrongdoing at RSPCA-related businesses.

“It is with deep sadness that I must today resign as Deputy Chairman of the RSPCA,” May wrote in a statement. The musician explains that he can no longer live with the way the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, as the organization is called as a whole, handles reports of abuses on farms, which are part of the animal club’s special program. According to animal activists, animal welfare is poorly regulated in some of these farms.

May said it was understandable that the RSPCA needed time to assess the matter and decide on a course of action. “But as more and more abuse comes to light, I think the RSPCA’s response is completely inadequate,” he wrote. May therefore wants the special program for livestock farms to be dismantled.

May has been vice-chairman of the RSPCA since 2012. Earlier this month, the 77-year-old guitarist announced he had suffered a mild stroke. He announced on Instagram that he is now fine.
