The team from Suriname’s Anton de Kom University has won the Latin American and Caribbean PetroBowl competition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. By taking first place, Surinamese students have made history. With the victory in the PetroBowl qualifiers on May 19, the Surinamese students have reached the world finals at the SPE ATCE in New Orleans (USA) in September.
The PetroBowl competitions were established in 2002. Organized and administered by the SPE Gulf Coast Section, they are held once a year. As its popularity grew, the program became a global event in 2013.
This included regional qualifiers in Africa and Asia in 2014 and an expansion to six regional qualifiers from 2015. The tournament is organized by the “Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE)”.
The winning Surinamese team consists of members of the SPE student branch of Anton de Kom University in Suriname. The global trade organization has more than 127,000 members in 145 countries involved in the exploration and production of oil and gas and related energy resources.
SPE is a major technical and professional organization that provides opportunities to exchange information at events and through training, publications and membership programs.
