Where to go for a long overdue catch-up with friends

Like Ixchel on the King’s Road, La Gamba’s Southbank location is a curse and a blessing; a blessing because it’s easily reached, a curse because it carries a certain reputation. Ignore the latter; La Gamba is nothing like its loud, ludicrously overpriced neighbouring chains. There are no colouring menus here, just croquetas filed with Cornish crab or Iberico ham, alongside big, grown up Gordal olives, quivering tortillas, cold sangria and crisp Catalonian wines. Though it does pre-theatre, it’s not beholden to it, and are as many tables taking their time over their tapas as there are keeping an eye on the clock. That said, if the plan, foolishly, is to combine a play with a long-lost pal, La Gamba is perfect. It serves all day, so late lunches and early dinners work a charm.
