The Wem: Memories of War project will produce a website, book and QR trail linking the War Memorial with Chapel Street and Whitchurch Road cemeteries, highlighting those who fell and survived on these streets. The route is available in English and Welsh and some other European languages.

Commemorative practices such as war memorials, commemorations and commemorations are also explored, showing how they continue to shape a community’s collective memory.

Volunteers, local groups and schools can participate in the project through events and educational opportunities, giving even more people access to an important part of their history.

Events continue throughout the project. Information is available through the club’s posters and Facebook pages.

A spokesman for Wem Civic Society said: “We are delighted to receive this support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, important records and memories are being preserved and made available to the wider community. After this year’s commemorations, the passage of time and people’s memories will begin to fade. Your often forgotten phrase we gave tomorrow Today'” are most apt – we must not forget these people and their sacrifices.
