The emergence of European private 5G networks offers new business opportunities

The European telecommunications world is changing with private 5G networks, which offers companies new opportunities to improve connections and operational efficiency. These networks are becoming more and more popular due to their robust security, fast data transfers and very low latency.

The benefits of private 5G networks

Private 5G networks provide exceptional connectivity, which is crucial for processing sensitive data and running business-critical applications without interruption. Enhanced security features, including advanced encryption protocols and secure network slicing, help businesses manage their data and reduce cybersecurity risks. In particular, industries such as healthcare, vehicle manufacturing, and public safety benefit from the real-time data transfer and lower latency provided by these networks.

According to research by Accedian, three-quarters of manufacturing organizations in Germany, Japan, the UK and the US plan to use private 5G networks by 2024. This trend highlights the growing recognition of the competitive advantages offered by 5G private networks.

Private 5G networks in the Benelux countries
In Belgium, the development of private 5G networks in commercial companies is progressing steadily. The first institutions to deploy the networks were the Port of Antwerp, the Port of Zeebrugge and Brussels Airport in 2020. More recently, in 2024, Kortrijk Hospital established a private 5G network. In the Netherlands, the first private 5G network was established in the port of Rotterdam in 2018, followed by the RAI Amsterdam conference center in 2024. Although Belgium and the Netherlands lag behind countries such as France, Finland and Germany – in the Netherlands this week, years later than planned, the auction of new 5G spectrum has begun – this development highlights the region’s growing interest in 5G technology.

Internet of Things (IoT)
An important aspect of private 5G networks is their ability to support a wide range of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. This is essential for industries such as industry and logistics, where IoT devices optimize processes and improve operational efficiency. For example, airports and ports can use private 5G networks to streamline their operations, improve the passenger experience and strengthen security measures through enhanced surveillance and automated systems.

Panasonic Connect 5G testing
To help organizations benefit from this technology, Panasonic Connect Europe has opened its first test environment for private 5G networks at Panasonic’s campus in Munich. This initiative, in partnership with a leading 5G-as-a-Service (5GaaS) provider, simplifies the deployment of private 5G networks in all industries. The Panasonic Customer Experience Center (CXC) enables companies to learn about the benefits of 5G technology and provides an immersive environment where the installation, configuration and benefits of 5G can be experienced firsthand.

5G-ready durable devices
A key requirement to realize these benefits is the integration of appropriate hardware designed to fully utilize the power of 5G. Panasonic’s latest Toughbook G2mk2 tablet is designed to connect directly to private 5G networks. This allows organizations to benefit from a dedicated, fully customized private 5G network that offers ultra-low latency, faster response times, and improved data transfer and communication for mobile workers.

CXC’s testing capabilities allow companies to test their applications and devices in a controlled environment, which is critical to fine-tuning performance before actual deployment. Many organizations are eager to unlock the potential of 5G, but have concerns or uncertainty about how to proceed. Panasonic Connect Europe’s connectivity expertise and range of 5G-optimized mobile devices provide secure, high-speed private 5G networks to customers and potential customers across Europe, where traditional networks or public 5G may not be sufficient.
