Sixth division Maidstone’s FA Cup saga ends with defeat at Coventry

Maidstone United’s adventure in the sixth division ended on Monday in the eighth round of the FA Cup. It lost 5-0 at Second Division Coventry, a club ranked 95 places higher in the English football pyramid.

Kent’s semi-pros, who are eighth in the National League South, already had their backs against the wall after the first half following Ellis Simms’ hat-trick (9th, 14th and 35th). Fabio Tavares (88th and 90th +2) secured the final points with two goals.

Maidstone United qualified for the round of 16 of the FA Cup after wins over fourth division Barrow, third division Stevenage and second division Ipswich Town, a team fighting for promotion to the Premier League.

It was 1978 and Blythe Spartans, as a team not playing in England’s top five divisions, could reach the last 16 of the FA Cup.

After the match at the Building Society Arena, Maidstone United’s players and staff were loudly cheered on by the fans in attendance.
