Fiona Buruma is the winner of the thesis award for VU’s charity fund management course. In his thesis, he compared two funds: Stichting Dioraphte and Fonds Schiedam Vlaardingen and the surrounding areas. He was especially praised for the second part of his thesis, which deals with the good governance of capital funds and business foundations. The thesis also proposes to examine the composition of the board, especially public recruitment, the minimum number of board members and the importance of heterogeneity in the board.
The award was presented at a symposium on philanthropy, taxation and finance held at the Rijksmuseum. Buruma works as Director of Finance & Operations at Dioraphte, which supports charities in the Netherlands and Africa, and Fonds Schiedam in Vlaardingen and the surrounding areas, which supports local social projects. In addition, he works as an independent consultant.
The philanthropic fund management course was started in 2010 at the initiative of the Catholic Welfare Work Promotion Foundation (KSBW) and with continuous support. Its purpose is to train, in four modules, young professionals who want to become voluntary members of the fund’s board. Read Fiona Buruma’s interview in our newsletter:
