STAMFORD — Police are investigating a fire that required “life-saving emergency medical care” to save two toddlers Wednesday afternoon.

Stamford police Lt. Jerry Junes said the department’s Special Victims Unit has opened a criminal investigation into a fire at a Custer Street apartment complex that led to the hospitalization of two children, ages 2 and 3.

Both children are “stable” but are still being treated at Yale Hospital, Junes said Thursday afternoon.

The neighborhood around Custer Street, lined with apartment complexes and a mix of single- and multi-family homes, was quiet early Thursday morning. At first glance, a passerby wouldn’t be able to tell that just a day earlier tragedy had nearly struck.

Firefighters found the two children semiconscious in the burning apartment when they responded to a 911 call from a neighbor reporting a fire alarm ringing in an adjacent unit at a Custer Street apartment complex on the city’s East Side around 4:05 p.m. Wednesday. The caller also mentioned noticing an odor of smoke, officials said.
