OAKLAND – One man was fatally shot and two others were injured during the attempted robbery of a Brinks armored truck Friday afternoon in East Oakland, police said.

The incident unfolded just before 2 p.m. Friday in the 4400 block of International Boulevard.

Officers arrived to find two men suffering from gunshot wounds, said Oakland police Chief LeRonne Armstrong. One was pronounced dead at the scene and the other, identified as a Brinks employee, was taken to an area hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

An innocent bystander was also hit by gunfire and sought treatment at an area hospital, Armstrong said.

“This is a terrible situation that unfolded in broad daylight,” Armstrong said. “We believe that this was a robbery attempt.”

Police were working to identify the man who died and any role he might have had in the attempted robbery, Armstrong said. Brinks and the FBI are supporting the investigation.

Armstrong said police were also searching for a white vehicle occupied by several people. He urged anyone with information related to the case to contact Oakland police.

Numerous streets in the area were shut down while police investigated the incident.

The killing is the 92nd homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time police had investigated 100 homicides. The California Highway Patrol has also investigated five homicides this year on Oakland freeways, including one Wednesday night.

On Sept. 7, a GardaWorld guard was shot during a robbery at Kaiser Medical Center in neighboring San Leandro. The 60-year-old man died of his injuries the following day.
