British preacher Anjem Choudary was sentenced to life imprisonment on Tuesday for leading a banned terrorist organization. The court said on Tuesday that he was “front and centre” in the leadership of the terrorist group al-Muhajirou (ALM). In addition, he “encouraged young men to radical action” through online lectures at the Islamic Thinkers Society (ITS), which prosecutors say is equivalent to ALM.

ALM was banned by the British government in 2010 after it was identified as a movement involved in the execution, preparation or promotion of terrorism. Choudary was considered a prominent Islamic preacher in Britain who attracted widespread attention when he praised the Al Qaeda attackers in New York on September 11, 2001. He was jailed in 2016 for calling for support for the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group. The trial in Britain on Tuesday was preceded by police investigations in the United States and Canada.

The prosecutor described Choudary as someone with a “twisted and distorted mentality”. He became the head of ALM after founder Omar Bakri Muhammad was imprisoned in Lebanon between 2014 and March 2023. After the 57-year-old Choudary has spent 28 years in prison, of which more than a year has already been spent in custody, he can apply for parole. In addition to Choudary, one of his followers, Khaled Hussein, was convicted of being a member of a banned organization. They were arrested in London a year ago.
